The Spread: Marvel vs Capcom Shared Power – The New Dark Phoenix Emerges!

Welcome to the latest edition of The Spread!  Today’s topic will strike upon that glorious competitive spirit that dwells within us all.  We are jumping into the world of fighting games, and what better way to do that than with the wildly-polarizing, crossover versus series that is Marvel vs Capcom.  Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is out now.  So, pick that up if you are interested in hyper-kinetic brawlers.

However, we are not here to focus on that debate.  We are here to have fun.  MvC is the pioneer gaming series for “what if” scenarios.  Marvel’s droves of popular comic characters and Capcom’s wide catalog of interesting titles has usually delivered some entertaining team-ups over the years.  For the next few iterations of this series of articles, we will delve into some of the more interesting possibilities for ability combinations and borrowed powers.  Certain criteria will be utilized from the get-go.

  1. The acquired power/ability/item must make thematic sense for the character.
  2. The backstory for the character must be able to be utilized to some degree.
  3. The combination should be entertaining and fun.

Demitri Maximoff Absorbs the Phoenix Force

Who is Demitri Maximoff?

In the demon realm of Makai a long time ago, a powerful vampire sought to reach above his station and challenge the ruler of the dimension.  Demitri Maximoff, the aspiring bloodsucker, was struck down by the mighty Belial and banished to the world of mortals.  Dramatically weakened, the would-be revolutionary took nearly 100 years to recover on the life essence of mortals.  Eventually, he could go out in the light of day before finally regaining his full strength.  When that day came, he made the decision to once again make a claim for the throne.  However, something unexpected occurred in the land of humans.

At least we know you remember these guys Capcom. However, had Jedah not been in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, we would have begun to wonder if you hated the series.

A cosmic entity, Pyron, would come to the planet seeking to challenge the strongest fighters in the universe.  Sensing opportunity, Demitri engaged the powerful alien and defeated him.  Draining this creature, a monster who was bigger than planets and could effortlessly strike down mighty Darkstalkers, gave Mr. Maximoff the boost he needed to return to his homeland and wreak sweet vengeance on his vanquisher.  Upon arriving in Makai, he immediately learned that Belial’s daughter had taken over as ruler.  This “Morrigan” would have to do.  All Demitri knew was that his time had come.  In a cruel twist of fate, this would be the moment that Jedah Dohma would suck the demons and humans into his own personal dimension.  The vampire would be denied Makai once more.  Not much is known about what transpired after this event.

He put on his cape of flourishing for this picture.

What is the Phoenix Force?

The manifestation of potential life and evolution, this cosmic entity has existed since the creation of the Marvel multiverse.  Many abstracts and celestial creatures fear this nearly unstoppable being of rebirth.  It has the ability to destroy and recreate sections of the universe or completely disintegrate the entirety of existence if it wants.  Luckily, the majority of the time the Phoenix tends to express its whims through an avatar.  This chosen humanoid receives the power to cleanse entire solar systems if the mood strikes and is tasked with enforcing the will of the unearthly presence.  Unfortunately, the Phoenix can become corrupted by the stress, painful memories, and/or evil intentions of the host.  This gives birth to the Dark Phoenix.  Who is usually intent on destruction with less focus on regrowing what is lost in the process.

What did Breakworld do to piss off the firebird?

Why it Works?

Let us first state that the major issues:  The Phoenix is ridiculously powerful and the creature has a predilection for selecting female avatars.  There are multiple ways to bypass these issues.  However, (statistically speaking) the cosmic might of this force of the multiverse is usually becomes too much for the host and they become corrupted at some point during the symbiotic relationship.  Also, there have been a handful of male hosts over the eons that embody the creature’s existence.  The second host of the Phoenix, Rook’shir, was a Shi’ar male.  The power was too great to wield, and he eventually went on a planet-busting spree.  However, he would channel some of the entity’s might through a sword.  A tiny fraction of the Phoenix Force became bound to the weapon and it was much easier to control then containing the full creature.

Ummm….I know redheads are known for their fiery personalities, but this is borderline ridiculous.

Fiery firepower is also not really an issue for Demitri.  As you can tell by the panel that depicts Phoenix hovering over Breakworld, the Phoenix can effortlessly consume space bodies and dwarfs them by a fair amount.  The panel directly below this paragraph bears a striking resemblance to that displayed Marvel comic.  Pyron is also a celestial being that can easily juggle planets and towers over them.  He shares a sunny disposition for cosmic pyrokinesis as well.  Yet, Demitri was able to overcome his avatar state, drain him, and absorb his power.  Lo would the universe would be forever changed if the vampire was able to get his hands on the Phoenix Force.

*Skeptical hippo eyes* Capcom? You don’t think this looks familiar?

With its power, Demitri Maximoff would become the new Dark Phoenix.  He would definitely have enough might to challenge Morrigan or Jedah or whoever else stepped in his path.  The only question would be who does he get the drop on to acquire its power.  Is it a time-displaced Rachel Summers?  Does he quell the prophecy of mutant salvation and defeat Hope Summers?  Or does he get the drop on the very embodiment of the Phoenix Force itself, Jean Grey?  Whoever it is, the once-defeated Darkstalker would rise above his station and claim not only the throne of Makai; he would claim the whole of existence as his kingdom.

That is it for today!  Join us for the next edition of the Spread when we go back over to the Marvel side of things!
